USAO Opens Invitation to Spring 2009 Europe Tour

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

A tour of Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and London will highlight The European Quartet trip scheduled May 13-21, 2009 through the University of Science and Arts. USAO students, alumni and members of the community are invited to participate.

Dr. Stephen Weber, associate professor of music at USAO, leads the trip. “This tour provides participants with an enriching cultural experience. It is a great way for USAO students to see significant historic sites, experience other cultures and cuisines and interact with alums and members of our local and global community. It was so wonderful to see our students interact with older adult participants as well as the adults enjoying spending time with our students during our trip to Germany,” Weber said. Weber led 32 participants to Germany and the Alps states in May 2008.

Featured sites for the trip include the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Arch of Triomphe and the Louvre in Paris. “Participants also have the option to add a half day visit to the Palace of Versailles outside Paris.

“In Amsterdam, tour stops include the Anne Frank House and the Westerner, where Rembrandt is buried, as well as historic walks in this city of canals. The stop in Brussels will include a visit to the European Union Building and the Grand Palace, considered by many to be the most beautiful town square in Europe,” Weber said.

The nine-day tour also includes a ride on the Eurostar train under the English Channel and a stay in London. Participants are scheduled to visit the Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Big Ben, and the Houses of Parliament.

“One of the great things about these trips is that all of the arrangements are made by the tour company. The participants can just enjoy the tour without worrying about making hotel, transportation, meal and ticketing arrangements. The tour guides are local and provide excellent historic background on places and sights on the tour,” Weber said.

Cost for the tour for individuals under 23 years old is $2,677. An additional fee is added for adult participants. Students will be housed four to a room and adults two to a room. Included in the cost is round trip airfare, hotels for eight nights, all entrance fees to sights on the tour, breakfast and dinner daily, Eurostar train tickets, ground transportation and licensed city guides. The tour company, EF Educational Tours, also provides a full-time bilingual tour guide for the duration of the trip, Weber said.

Interested individuals should plan to enroll by Jan. 1, 2009. An initial enrollment fee of $95 and a deposit of $450 are due Jan. 1 to secure a spot on the tour. The balance is due by Feb. 1, 2009.
